Can you recall the last time you attended a theatrical production? If not, Swine Palace has something special in store for you. The theatre troupe is beginning their season with the Pulitzer Prize finalist, Gloria by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. Check it out this Friday at Reilly Theatre.
Taking place in modern-day Manhattan, Gloria opens on a normal workday for a group of aspiring writers who are growing tired of the monotony of their desk jobs. Dean stumbles in hungover from a party held at Gloria’s home the night prior. As the day goes on, everyone goes about their business, though tensions are high with a dispute over who should be allowed to write a story on a deceased singer, and Gloria begins to act stranger than usual.
In a sudden shift in tone, Gloria harms many workers, including Miles and Ani, leaving Dean, Kendra, Nan, and Lorin alive. The story then follows the fallout of each character's life as they try to cope with the stress of witnessing the events and feud over who deserves a book deal based on the events. Questions on the reasoning behind the events and workplace toxicity are posed during the play.
Swine Palace operates with a dual mission to provide South Louisiana with high quality, professional productions of classical and contemporary theater with an emphasis on plays exploring issues of social equity. Swine Palace also serves as a training ground for students at Louisiana State University’s M.F.A. Professional Actor and Technical/Design Training Programs.
