Coastal Louisiana is one of the most dynamic places in the country. Generations who have lived there have adapted to the changing landscape. Join LSU Associate Professor of Religious Studies and History Michael Pasquier to learn about the oral history project, Coastal Voices, he and his students have embarked upon to capture the stories of Louisiana's resilience at Varsity Theatre this Tuesday, August 27th.
Coastal Voices is about storytelling. It’s about slowing down, shutting up, and listening to the people who call Louisiana home. Their experiences of living on land and with water are unique to Louisiana, but they are also transferable to other coastal cultures in the United States and around the world. Their stories serve as acts of cultural preservation, responses to ongoing transformation, and reflections on future orientation.
Michael Pasquier, a native of Louisiana, joined LSU’s faculty in 2008. He has spent his entire life, in one way or another, listening to people sharing their experiences of coastal living. With funding from the Whiting Foundation, Michael and a team of LSU students started the Coastal Voices initiative as a way to broaden and deepen the public understanding of natural and human challenges facing Louisiana’s endangered coast.
Dr. Pasquier specializes in the history of religion in the United States, with areas of concentration in American Catholicism and religion in the U.S. South. His first book, Fathers on the Frontier, profiles the lives of French missionary priests and the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. His forthcoming textbook, Religion in America: The Basics, is a concise and affordable introduction to the study of American religious history.
